I’ve been a Michigan SEO since 2000, a long time considering the age of the internet, and in that time I’ve made some major mistakes and learned from them all!

Some of the most damaging mistakes website owners make are:

• Using the wrong web hosting company. A number of my sites became so popular that my inexperienced hosting company decided to block bots. If you don’t know what bots are, they are programs that grab information from your website.

  The hosting company assumed that human visitors were important, but that bots could be blocked. Google, Yahoo and other search engines use bots to rank your site and blocking killed my rankings! Needless to say, this Michigan SEO no longer uses that hosting company.

• Choosing the wrong domain name. Domain names and file names can make a big difference! All things equal, a good domain name and proper file name structure will give you the advantage over your competitor.

  If you started off with the wrong filename structure and would like change, you need to use extreme caution! If you don’t do it right, it will leave you dead in the water when it come to traffic and ranking!

• Growing too fast. The best method to building links is viral marketing, something this Michigan SEO highly recommends! It’s tempting to run out and try to build links, but if you do it the wrong way, the search engines may see the growth as artificial and ban you.
• Choosing a saturated niche. There are countless niches out there and all you need to do is find a few and go for it. Choosing a popular niche is a sure way to frustration and fast burn out!
• Not using a content management system (CMS). The right CMS will take care of programming, formatting, design, mailing lists and just about everything else; without one, you’ll need to spend valuable time learning all this before you even start your site!

  Even if you do learn, or hire someone to build you site, you’ll be spending time in maintenance while your competitor will be spending that same time getting their site ranked high. You also run the risk that the coding may work, but is so disorganized that another programmer may not be able to work with it!

• Choosing a server that has poor security. The right webhost will make sure that your customer base and important information does not fall into the wrong hands due to a missing security patch or improper security configuration. The last thing you need is for your customer list to end up in the competitions hands.
• Targeting the wrong search engine. I’ve seen far too many website owners targeting and getting excited about ranking high on MSN. In most cases, you can expect a phenomenal amount of visitors from Google for the same term on MSN.

  There are situations where you have to target a term, such as for your company. Google may be too competitive for that term yet MSN may offer you a fighting chance; choosing the right search engine is key!

The list goes on and it is imperative that you understand them before you start your site. If you have started your site, you can make the changes, but they need to be done carefully or you’ll do more damage than good.
